Abiy D. Mekoya, MD, is the Treasurer and Board Member of Ethio-American Doctors Group, Inc. Dr. Mekoya is currently a Hospitalist at University Hospital of Augusta in GA and Oconee Regional Hospital in Milledgeville Georgia. At the time he joined the University Hospital Medical Group Hospitalists in 2011, he accepted a position of Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Hospital Medicine to teach Medical Students, Residents and Nurse Practitioners for Augusta University (formerly Georgia Regency University and Medial College of Georgia). He has held these positions since October of 2011. Prior to these positions, he was an Attending Physician at University, Trinity, and Select Specialty Hospitals in Augusta, Georgia. He was also in private practice at East Georgia Internal Medicine, LLC, during 2006 to 2011. Prior to completing his residency program here in the United States, Dr. Mekoya worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Branch Villa Health Care Center in Seattle, Washington while taking United States Medical Licensing Exams. From 1999 to 2000, he was a General Medical Practioner at Tana-Addis Higher Clinic in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Prior to enrolling in medical school, Dr. Mekoya attended Debre Tabor Hospital Health Assistance Training Institute as a health assistant (equivalent to an LPN in the US) which he practiced for about 4 years in Ethiopia under the Ministry of Health. He received his Medical Degree from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, in 1999, where he received academic excellence honors bestowed by the academic commission of the faculty for an outstanding performance. He was also on the Dean’s List. After immigrating to the United States, Dr. Mekoya completed his Internal Medicine Residency training at the University of Wisconsin/Aurora Medical Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2006. Dr. Mekoya is Board Certified in Internal Medicine/Hospital Medicine, and currently holds medical licenses in Wisconsin and Georgia States. While practicing as a hospitalist, Dr. Mekoya enrolled and completed his Master in Public Health with a concentration in Health Informatics from Augusta University/Georgia Regents University.
